Former Chair - Smart Grid Interoperability Panel - Priority Action Plan 25 - Harmonizing Financial Data

Former Co-Chair - SGIP/SEIA Orange Button - Finance Subcommittee

Former Chair - SunSpec Alliance Orange Button - Surety Subcommittee

K. Dixon Wright began his career in the surety industry in 1981. Over the years, he has gained extensive experience, working with both large brokerages and as the owner of North Coast Surety Insurance Services, a specialty surety agency, and North Coast Surety Technologies, a technology company.

In 2009, Wells Fargo Insurance Services acquired North Coast Surety Insurance Services, while North Coast Surety Technologies transitioned to Surety Resource Connection (now SRC Digital Insurance Services). SRC focuses on developing next-generation products and services to address industry needs.

Dixon has been a strong advocate for open standards and interoperability, aiming to tackle one of the surety industry’s most significant challenges: improving access to surety credit for small and emerging businesses. Smaller companies often struggle to secure financial support due to high administrative costs relative to their revenue. By reducing these costs, smaller businesses become more attractive clients for financial service providers.

A key focus of Dixon's efforts has been expanding the XBRL taxonomy to include commonly used data fields tailored to the Construction, Energy, and Transportation industries. Enhanced efficiency from these efforts benefits small businesses and helps large public and private entities meet evolving technological demands.

Beyond expanding access to surety credit, Dixon is also engaged in developing data modeling tools and analytics for performance measurement. These tools aim to better manage contractor default risk and monitor utility interconnection projects. One such innovation, a beta Performance Measurement dashboard, was submitted to the Department of Energy’s Apps for Energy Contest – Data by Design. This work was later integrated into the DOE-funded Orange Button initiative.

Dixon’s work with XBRL includes exploring how contractor financial statements can be shared with surety companies more effectively. By streamlining underwriting processes, small companies can enjoy the same interoperability advantages as larger, publicly traded entities. His objective is to align industry-specific standards across various trade associations to improve access to surety credit for small and emerging businesses, enabling their participation in community-serving projects.

Additionally, Dixon is working to integrate XBRL standards into the development of the nation’s smart grid infrastructure. His goal is to ensure that small and emerging companies can secure surety credit and participate in these projects. By incorporating open standards into project management tools, utility companies and developers can access a broader pool of qualified, bonded local contractors while effectively managing contractor default risks.
